In an attempt to market to a more diverse audience, Bud Light has recently partnered with transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney. Many conservatives have their panties in a bunch, with some boycotting the brand and singer-songwriter Kid Rock going as far as to post a video online of him shooting up Bud Light cans with a rifle in protest. Seth Weathers, CEO of Freedom Speaks Up, claims Anheuser-Bush is “spitting on” conservative values, prompting him to launch his own “100% woke free American beer” called ‘Ultra Right.’ Weathers went on to say that “Bud Light has hired a mentally deranged freak to market perversion to little children…Corporations that do that should be put out of business by conservatives,” Weathers said. “We are half of America.”
Dylan Mulvaney rose to fame in 2022 by documenting her gender transition in a daily series of videos published on TikTok titled ‘Days of Girlhood.’ This series sparked backlash from people who felt that the videos depicted Mulvaney mocking women for crying, being “bimbos,” being scared of bugs, and other offensive stereotypes. Such behavior from a man would most likely be characterized as sexist. Mulvaney has also been criticized for her fascination with tampons, since she has no real use for them.
After Mulvaney met with President Biden last October, Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn shared a tweet in which she said that “Dylan Mulvaney, Joe Biden, and radical left-wing lunatics want to make this absurdity normal”. Caitlyn Jenner, who is also a transgender woman, wrote on Twitter that she agreed with Blackburn’s remarks and called Mulvaney’s videos an “absurdity.”
On March 13, 2023, Mulvaney hosted a livestreamed variety show at the Rainbow Room in Midtown Manhattan entitled ‘Dylan Mulvaney’s Day 365 Live!’ to celebrate the one year anniversary of her TikTok video series. Mulvaney shared a letter from vice president Kamala Harris congratulating her, along with a Bud Light can from Anhauser-Bush that featured Mulvaney’s face.
Regardless of how I feel about Dylan Mulvaney as a public figure, the response from the right in regard to her partnership with Bud Light is laughable. Watching people pour out cans of beer that they have already bought and paid for is absurd to me. Why waste your money? If how a brand chooses to market its product is that important to you, just take your business elsewhere.
Besides, anyone in their right mind knows beer is disgusting.
